The horse gets its nutrition and energy from the microbial fermentation that takes place in the large intestine. The environment in the large intestine is sensitive and an imbalance in the intestinal flora can have negative consequences on the horse's health.
Imbalance can be caused by e.g. feed change, long-term stress and antibiotic use. Imbalance and disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract mean that the amount of good bacteria decreases while unwanted and pathogenic bacteria increase. To help the horse balance the intestinal flora and activate the good bacteria, prebiotics can be given.
Prebiotics are nutrition in the form of fibers and sugars that are specifically meant to benefit the good intestinal flora already present in the gastrointestinal tract.
Was ist Maerl?
Maerl is a red algae (Lithothamnium spp) that grows naturally on the seabed. Its structure allows the body to easily absorb its nutrients. Maerl has a rapid effect on the pH value in the stomach, but is also effective over a long period of time, which keeps the pH value stable.
